Making a Backup of Your Website

By Admin, December 27, 2009 10:39 pm
This post is all about one topic – backups.  I know, it’s not a fun topic but it’s extremely important so please read carefully and take the few minutes to create a backup as soon as you can.
Brief Overview

It Only Takes 5 Minutes

Stop WatchAlthough we take a backup for you each week (on Sunday), we only keep that backup for one week.  If we maintain your website then we always have a current backup.

Regardless of who maintains your website,  it’s only prudent that you have a recent backup stored on your computer (or a DVD or external hard drive).

Step by Step Instructions

Really, Just 5ish Minutes

Step 1: Log into your control panel.  If you don’t know how, please see Visit Your Control Panel.

Step 2: Under Files, click ‘Backup’.

Step 3:  ‘Click Download or Generate a Full Backup’.

Step 4: Select ‘Home Directory’ as the Destination and make sure the email address is correct. Click ‘Generate Backup’.

Step 5. The backup may take a few minutes.  When it’s done, go back to the ‘Backup’ option under ‘Files’ in the control panel. ‘Click Download or Generate a Full Backup’ (again).

Step 6. Under ‘Backups Available For Download’, select the most recent. Click ‘Save File’ to save the file somewhere on your hard drive or on a CD/DVD. You’re done!

Questions?
Now, wasn’t that easy?  OK, maybe 10 minutes — tops.

Make a note to yourself that you need to do this routinely, depending on how often your site changes.

There are additional steps you could/should take if you run a blog — we’ll discuss those in a later issue.
